Washington State DOT
As a large fleet, Washington State DOT faces the same issues affecting other transportation companies – including corrosion. On January 22, 2009, they launched a 10-year, comprehensive anti-corrosive field test to determine what anti-corrosion system really works.
“Advancements in de-icing chemicals have improved our ability to keep the roadways safe, but it may have also accelerated the corrosion process. Components on our equipment, even the dump bodies, are corroding before they should, and it’s significantly affecting our maintenance costs.”

WSDOT sought a solution to the corrosion. “I followed up on a referral to a Michigan company. “The company made claims that were almost too good to be true. I asked if they’d be willing to prove themselves in a real-world, long-term field test, and to my surprise, they confidently said yes.” ~ Joe Stinton
“We only undertake field tests as no one has a lab test that correlates to real-world, in-field conditions.”
~ Phil Pierce, President PRP® Industries, Inc.
WSDOT committed three salt trucks to the test. Fleet numbers 6E14-33, 6E14-34, the CORSOL® corrosion solutions protected truck, and 6E14-35. 33 and 35 were treated with Sherwin Williams Genesis 2 component epoxy and 2 component urethane over blasted steel.
The first of the painted truck bodies failed at eight years. In 2017, truck 6E14-33 was disposed of as it had fist-sized corrosion holes through the body. WSDOT was expecting to get 15 years of service from this truck and body. This painted body only gave 53% of its service life.
16E14-34 and 35 worked side by side in the Pasco yard. Both trucks were exposed to the same environmental conditions and the same team of operators and service techs.
In 2018, the trucks were reviewed for the first time by PRP® Industries, Inc. in the Pasco facility. The Pasco technicians remarked how much less work it took to make repairs to 34, the CORSOL® corrosion solutions protected truck, “as there was no corrosion to fight.”
They said everything about it was easier. The drivers took better care of it as they could still take pride in the vehicle’s appearance. Even after ten years of service, the truck and body appearance was as it was when it was new.
Joe Stinton was promoted into a new role, but he kept up to date with the field test.
He said PRP® Industries, Inc. had good reason to have such confidence in the CORSOL® corrosion solutions protection.
The CORSOL® corrosion solutions protection stopped corrosion on the salt trucks. The difference between one of the best paint systems and the CORSOL® corrosion solutions protection is remarkable. Paint has no standing at all in this test.”
